LETS TALK ABOUT YOUR NERVOUS SYSTEM!

The nervous system helps all the parts of the body to communicate with each other. It also reacts to changes both outside and inside the body, such as stress or trauma

Our nervous system is responsible for many things from basic to more complex tasks, some include;

  • Movement of your body

  • Beating of your heart, breathing and even sweating

  • Your senses; sight, hearing, taste, touch and smell

  • Your thoughts and feelings

Your brain and spinal cord make up the central nervous system and this has nerves which connect this area to the peripheral nervous system. The peripheral nervous system is made up of two main parts: the autonomic and the somatic nervous systems and within the autonomic nervous system there are two types;

  1. Sympathetic nervous system.

This is located near the middle and lower parts of your spine and the function is to stimulate the flight or fight response. Some responses you may notice include;

  1. Eyes: Dilated pupils

  2. Pancreas: Inhibits salivation

  3. Heart: increases heartbeat

  4. Lungs: relaxes airways

  5. Stomach: Inhibits stomach activity

  6. Liver: Stimulates glucose production

  7. Intestines: Inhibits digestion

  8. Bladder: Relaxes bladder

  9. Kidneys: Decrease the activity

  10. Skeletal muscle: Increase blood flow and tone

    2. Parasympathetic nervous system.

This is located in the spinal cord and up into the brain. This stimulates the rest and digest responses. Some responses you may notice include;

  1. Eyes: Constricted pupils

  2. Pancreas: Increases salivation

  3. Heart: Slows heartbeat

  4. Lungs: Constrict airways

  5. Stomach: Stimulates stomach activity

  6. Liver: Stimulates bile release

  7. Intestines: Stimulates digestion

  8. Bladder: Constricts bladder

  9. Skeletal muscle: Decrease blood flow and tone

Stress on the nervous system can present a number of ways, this can include the above responses or further symptoms include;

  • Headaches

  • Blurry vision

  • Fatigue

  • Legs or arm weakness / loss of strength

  • Behavioural change

Chiropractic care can help settle and keep the nervous system healthy through adjustments to the spine and extremity as well as cranial movements! Your nervous system is the command center for your entire body and sometimes it needs care to keep working effectively. So if you are feeling some nervous system symptoms, get adjusted, eat a healthy diet and keep moving!
