Torticollis "wryneck" - Baby

TORTICOLLIS “WRYNECK” - HOME EXERCISES

Join Chiropractor Karli Plowright as she demonstrates some home exercises that may help you and your baby with torticollis/wryneck.

1) Sidelying stretch

  • Securely hold your baby with their back toward you

  • Involved side down/on your arm

    • gently cup your baby’s ear with your other hand

    • gently stretch in the opposite direction (do not force it) ie. bring ear toward shoulder

  • Repeat on the other side

2) Football hold shoulder rotations

  • Securely hold your baby in a football hold (tummy on your arm)

  • Involved side accessible

    • gently bring their arm up in a circular motion (do not force it)

  • Repeat on the other side

3) Intentional cuddle

  • Hold your baby toward you

  • Rotate their head to the side they do not prefer (do not force it)

  • Hold your baby toward you in this position for 5-10mins or as long as is tolerable/possible

Other homecare tips:

  • Place your baby on the floor/in their bouncer etc in such a way that they would need to turn their head in the direction they don’t like in order to follow your voice

  • Tummy time!

  • Have your baby assessed by a paediatric chiropractor, osteopath, physiotherapist (or similar) to find the cause of the torticollis
